Montessori Math Tools for Children

The Montessori Spindle Box is a material that will help the child develop their mathematical abilities – counting and learning their numbers.

This set of spindle box is composed of 2 rectangular wooden boxes with 5 different compartments in each of them.

With 2 boxes, young children could focus on learning the first 5 numbers before moving onto the full set.

Understand the Concept of " Zero"

  • The spindle box represents the introduction to more concrete and abstract areas such as addition and subtraction, so it gives the child the opportunity to understand how numerals work.
  • This item encourages the child to associate different numbers with specific quantities in real life by completing the task of introducing the right quantity of spindles into the correct compartment.
  • The Child encounters 0 for the first time, when they use this activity. She/He usually wants to put a spindle in this compartment but has to learn that Zero means none or nothing.
